Watch Where You're Walking: How To Protect Your Ankles From Injuries

by Elmer Perry

When it comes to physical activity, you probably do a lot of prep work. You make sure you have the right shoes on; if you've been having trouble with your knees, you might put on a knee brace. However, you might not do much to protect your ankles. Unfortunately, it doesn't take much to sprain your ankle, and once your ankle is sprained, the physical activity has to come to a stand-still. If you haven't been paying much attention to your ankles, you need to; an ankle sprain can cause serious pain. Not only that, but if the sprain is bad enough, it can leave you with lasting problems. Here are four important steps you should take to protect your ankles from injury.

Get Your Body in Balance

You might not realize this, but proper balance is essential to ankle health. If you don't have good balance, your ankles could be at risk for serious injuries. Luckily, it doesn't take much to get your body in balance. The easiest thing you can do is spend some time each day standing on one foot. While you're washing dishes, or brushing your teeth, stand on one foot for about 30 seconds. Switch, and stand on the other foot for 30 seconds. Repeat this several times a day. Over time, your balance will get better and your ankles will be stronger.

Brace Yourself

Whether you're going to be participating in strenuous physical activity, or you're just going out for a leisurely walk, you need to make sure that your ankles are well-protected. The best way to do that is to brace them up: grab some ankle tape, and wrap your ankles up before you head out for any type of physical activity. That way, your ankles have all the support they'll need to stay safe and secure.

Watch Where You Step

It doesn't take much to injure your ankle. In fact, just one misstep can cause your foot to roll, resulting in a nasty ankle injury. You can avoid those types of injuries by watching where you step. That doesn't mean that you need to look down at the ground everywhere you walk, but it does mean that you need to scan the ground in front of you as you walk. Scanning in front of you will prevent you from missteps. It will also prevent you from stepping in a hole and breaking your ankle.

Don't take chances with your ankles. Use the simple tips provided here to prevent foot and ankle injuries. If you do injure yourself, be sure to visit an ankle doctor as soon as possible especially if you develop significant swelling, or the pain doesn't decrease over time.
