Symptoms And Signs Of A UCL Injury

by Elmer Perry

If you are a sports enthusiast and like baseball, then you may be very familiar with the types of injuries that are commonly associated with the sport. In particular, elbow injuries are common with UCL tears on the top of the list of possible problems. If you think that a UCL injury may be probable, then you should know that there are some very specific signs of the injury. Keep reading to learn about a few.

Elbow To Wrist Pain

The UCL or the ulnar collateral ligament is the name for three separate bands of tissues that attach the upper arm bone, the humerus, to the lower arm bones, the ulna and radius. The thick tissues sit more towards the middle and inside of the elbow. In other words, the tissues sit closer to the inside of the body, and the outside part of the arm and elbow are connected to bicep and the bicep tendon.

Due to the location of the UCL, you are likely to feel pain on the inside of the arm. This pain tends to radiate from the elbow to the wrist as you move your arm and hand. In some cases, you may feel discomfort surging down to your pinkie finger. Since the ulnar nerve or funny bone sits in the area, you may also notice tingling, numbness, and a tickling sensation coming from your arm.

Not only will you feel pain, but your elbow may feel unstable as if the elbow is loose. You also may have a great reduction in strength when you go to use your arm.

Snapping Noises

If you can recall the moment when an injury caused your elbow issue, then you may have heard or felt a pop when it happened. Ligaments are dense tissues that stretch out when you move your bones. When this is done in a way that you overextend the joint, the ligament tissues stretch out as well. If you are throwing a ball when the overextension occurs and the ligament rips or tears, then the release of the pressure will cause the pop.

Popping sounds are typically hear in cases where the UCL completely tears. Before this happens, you may note some elbow soreness. This soreness should not be ignored. A medical orthopedic doctor can assist you with a resting, stretching, and exercise regimen that can help you to reduce complete tear injuries.

A medical orthopedist is also the individual you should see if a complete ligament tear or rupture occurs. Surgery is often required to reattach the ligament.
