Ways To Maintain Good Mental Health When You Are A Caregiver

by Elmer Perry

When you have been the one providing daily care for a sick family member, it can be a grueling job some of the time. In an effort to care for your loved one properly, you could be neglecting your own needs. This can bode poorly for both you and your family member, as you may soon become burnt out and their care may suffer or you might resent them. Caregivers are 30 times more likely to develop depression than others, so it is vital that you safeguard your mental health. Here are ways you can maintain a good mental attitude when you're a caregiver.

Meet Other Caregivers

One of the best ways to stay positive is to spend time talking with those who are also caregivers and understand what it is that you do every day. You don't have to explain why you're so tired or why you are wearing the same clothes you had on yesterday; they know what you must deal with. Most hospitals have information about support groups for caregivers, and your doctor or your loved one's doctor can also recommend groups. If you can't get out of the house often, you can also join a few support forums online. You can bounce ideas off of the others in the group and vent when you need to.

Utilize Respite Care

You may desperately crave an hour or two for the movies or time for a few days' vacation to the beach but think it's not possible. Luckily, respite care exists for just that purpose. Respite care offers temporary care for your family member when you want to get away and have a break. Because respite care facilities have nurses and other medical staff available at all times of the day, you won't have to worry that something will happen to your loved one; you can take some time to truly relax and enjoy yourself.

When you start looking for a respite center, such as Cornerstone Hospice and Palliative Care, be particularly aware of the activities that are offered. Make sure that there are activities for all ability levels and that your loved one will be able to engage in something that interests them. For instance, your loved one might not like walks or dancing, but they may love less active things like bingo and painting. Being sure that there is something they like to do can help you know that your loved one is having an enjoyable time while you're away.

You may love your family member and feel responsible for their care, but as a caregiver you need to make sure your needs are also being met. Use the ideas here to help you retain a healthy, positive mental mood so that you can continue to do your best for your loved one.
