Natural Acne Solutions: Tea Tree Oil

by Elmer Perry

Are you tired of shopping your local drugstore for acne treatments and finding that each one contains harsh chemicals that you just know will dry out your skin and make your breakouts worse? These acne solutions are sold because for some people, they do work well. However, for those who have sensitive skin and prefer a more natural solution, there is a different acne solution to consider: tea tree oil.

What is tea tree oil?

Tea tree oil is an essential oil that's extracted from a plant that's related to the plant used to make black and green tea. It's completely natural, and it has a few properties that make it great for treating acne:

  • It kills bacteria
  • It's mildly drying, but not to the extent of irritating the skin
  • It helps alleviate redness and swelling

How do you use tea tree oil to treat acne?

It you'd like to use tea tree oil to treat your acne as a wash, you have two choices:

  1. You can use a prepared tea tree oil solution from the drugstore. Several brands sell tea tree oil-based washes made for patients with acne. Look for one that contains as few ingredients as possible; there will be less of a chance of your skin reacting negatively to another ingredient. Use it according to the package instructions.
  2. You can make your own tea tree oil wash. Purchase a bottle of tea tree oil (look at your health food store if you can't find it at your drugstore)  and a bottle of plain, unscented liquid castile soap. Mix a drop of tea tree oil with a dime-size amount of the castile soap, and use this wash to clean your face. The castile soap is natural and made with olive oil, so it should be gentle on your skin.

How can you use tea tree oil to spot-treat acne?

You can also use tea tree oil topically to treat very inflamed and irritated pimples. Apply a drop to the end of a cotton swab, and then gently dab it on your pimple. Be careful to let the oil absorb into your skin completely before going to bed or rubbing your face. You don't want to get the oil on your pillow, as it may stain, and you don't want to get it into your eye, either.

Tea tree oil is a great solution for those who want to fight their acne naturally. Follow the tips above for success. Contact a professional like one from Changes Of Cherry Creek/ Denver's Day Spa to learn more about facial treatments.
