2 Vital Things An Addict Needs To Overcome An Addiction

by Elmer Perry

If you are dealing with an addiction you might be wondering if there is a way out. For some, addiction can be a never-ending cycle that is full of relapses and hopelessness. But for others they can successfully overcome their addiction and live the life they have always wanted. So what is the difference? Here are some important things you need to know about overcoming addiction.

1. Admit Weakness and Submit To A Higher Power

People who try to overcome an addiction through sheer will power are usually unable to succeed. An addiction can rewire your brain so even the strongest of individuals succumb to its temptations. That is why it is so important that the addict recognize their weakness. They need to know what triggers them and how to stay away. By being overly confident about your abilities to withstand temptations and triggers will be your downfall.

This is why many people submit themselves to a high power. Whether it's God, Mother Nature, or some other spiritual thing, it is important that the individual ask for help and assistance from something bigger than themselves, recognizing that they are weak and are likely to relapse. This will help the addict to withstand relapses.

2. Rely On Your Support Group

Having a good support group is vital to recovery. Usually after the person has successfully completed their rehabilitation program they are assigned a sponsor. This person is someone who has been sober for a good deal of time and has no emotional connection to the addict. The sponsor and the addict check in with each other often, sometimes even a couple times a day, to deal with triggers and relapses. As the addict gets better and better they may not need to use their sponsor as often.

In addition to the sponsor, it is important to have family and friends that support the addict throughout their recovery. The addict must have people who believe in them and who motivate them to want to continue recovery. This doesn't mean that the addict is going through recovery only for their loved ones; they must want recovery and soberness for themselves first and foremost. However, having people that the addict loves surrounding the addict and helping them through the difficult times can be one of the most important things in recovery.

These are just a couple things that are vital to recovery. Without these traits it may be hard for the individual to find true healing from their addiction. To learn more, contact a treatment center like Arizona Consulting And Counseling Services
