The Tummy Tuck Twosome: Two Surgeries That Go Perfectly With Tummy Tucks

by Elmer Perry

A tummy tuck is done when a patient wants to get rid of extra fat, and often extra skin, in the abdominal area. The tummy tuck surgery not only creates a better abdominal profile but also repairs separated stomach muscles or reinforces severely weakened abdominal muscles. Many patients who opt for a tummy tuck are looking for a significant cosmetic change in the body, but to achieve the degree of change desired some other surgeries may be necessary. For this reason, there are two surgeries that often go hand-in-hand with tummy tucks. Read on to learn about the tummy tuck add-on surgeries that are most popular today.

Liposuction: Removing Fat From Other Areas

While liposuction (the surgical removal of fat) is part of a tummy tuck, that liposuction is only performed on the abdominal area. Some people who opt for a tummy tuck have excess fat in other areas, as well. This fat would remain after a tummy tuck, which could leave the body looking disproportionate.

Patients can have liposuction performed on other, non-abdominal, areas at the same time as the tummy tuck surgery to combat this problem. The most popular area for liposuction done concurrently with a tummy tuck may be the thighs, also known as the "saddlebag" area. However, liposuction can be done on nearly any other part of the body where excess fat lingers.

Breast Surgery: Breast Reduction or Lift

Breast surgeries--in particular, the breast reduction and the breast lift--are often done at the same time the tummy tuck is performed. This type of surgery may be especially popular among new mothers, hence its popular nickname "The Mommy Makeover Surgery." Many patients whose breasts have changed as they aged also opt for this type of surgery at the same time they get a tummy tuck.

The breasts may change significantly during pregnancy or as the years pass, and women may want to simply restore their breasts to their previous shape and position. If extra fat lingers, this may be best accomplished by a breast reduction. If sagging is the primary issue, a breast lift may be done.

Both of these breast surgeries work well as a tummy tuck add-on because they are performed just above the abdominal area where the tummy tuck is done. The surgeon can do both surgeries with an eye on overall balance and proportion rather than trying to correct just one area at a time.

Perhaps the biggest benefit to adding one of the above surgeries to a tummy tuck is that it reduces the number of times you have to go under anesthesia. This also means that you'll be going through one recovery period rather than two or three separate recovery periods. If you think that a tummy tuck with an add-on might be right for you, call a local plastic surgeon (such as Body Spectrum Plastic Surgery Center - Bruce R Barton MD). Consultations are often free of charge!
