Back To School: 2 Ways To Help Your Child Keep Good Dental Health Habits During The School Year

by Elmer Perry

If your child is finally old enough to brush and floss on their own, then you may have spent all summer teaching them good oral-health habits. Now that school is starting, you don't want to lose all of that progress and let healthy habits fade due to a jam-packed school day schedule and sleepovers at the houses of your child's new friends. Here are two tips to help you help your child keep up with those good oral-care habits you have been teaching them all summer.

1. Be Aware That Some New Habits Must Still Be Formed

While you may think your child has already developed the habit of brushing their teeth every morning and it will automatically continue throughout the school year, you are only half right if your child slept in late during the summer and was in no rush during the morning to get anywhere.

Your child now faces a new challenge to form a slightly new habit of not only brushing every morning, but also making enough time during a busy, short morning to brush. It is important to begin developing this habit with your child from the very first day of school.

Once you motivate your child to brush every morning for a while, it will become a habit that they perform automatically, but how long it takes for that to happen is unclear. Some believe habits form in about 21-days to one-month, others say about 66 days. Either way, brushing before school will eventually become a habit that your child will then have for the rest of his or her life.

2. Pack Disposable Teeth-cleaners in Your Child's Lunch Boxes

While you can send your child to school with a full-sized toothbrush and a toothpaste travel tube, whether your child uses them or not will be out of your control. There is a chance your child will feel too embarrassed to use them when their friends are not brushing after lunch and many teachers don't allow children extra bathroom visits to brush their teeth alone.

To encourage brushing after lunch without your child having to carry bulky oral-care items around after lunch and stick out like a sore thumb, just include a disposable tooth-brushing device in their lunch box. There several kinds, and most are tiny brushes with dried toothpaste already on them.

Your child can then put it right in their pocket after eating lunch and carry it discreetly into the bathroom to brush. Their friends many even think the device is "cool" and ask their parents to start including them in their lunches.

If your child is just learning good oral-health habits, then don't let the fact that school is starting make you think that all of their good habits will now derail. Follow these two tips to begin a new habit of keeping oral-care an important part of the school day.
