4 Ways You Can Control Your Arthritis Symptoms

Part of treating arthritis is not exacerbating the condition and doing what you can to make yourself healthier. Do Not Smoke

Smoking is a bad habit that can affect your overall health and may aggravate your arthritis symptoms. Studies have shown that some people with rheumatoid arthritis can experience a worsening of symptoms if they smoke. Studies have also shown that a leading cause of death for people with arthritis is heart disease. Smoking is one of the risk factors for developing heart disease. 

Start Exercising

One of the symptoms of arthritis is that it causes swelling to the joints and also impacts your flexibility and mobility. You might believe that resting all the time can help with your symptoms, but it can actually lead to your condition worsening. To help keep flexible, it is important that you engage in at least moderate amounts of exercise. Talk to your doctor about the exercises you should be doing. He or she can also make a referral to a physical therapist if you need additional guidance in exercising. 

Take Your Medications as Directed

Ideally, you should be taking your arthritis medications as you've been directed. Unfortunately, when pain hits, you might be tempted to take more of your medicine that recommended to help alleviate your symptoms. On the reverse, you might be reluctant to take your medicine regularly if you are feeling better. Whatever the excuse, it is important that you stick to the dosages that your doctor prescribed. Lose Weight

Although losing weight is usually the recommendation for many conditions, it is especially important when you have arthritis. When you are overweight, it can place more pressure on your joints, which can make your symptoms worse. Even losing just a few pounds can make a difference in how you feel. Work with your doctor and a nutritionist to develop a healthy eating and exercise regimen that works for you.

Keeping your symptoms under control can take some time and effort, but it is doable.
